A new Statistics Canada study offers a more cautious picture of AI’s labour-market effects than sweeping predictions of job replacement. Using Labour Force Survey data through August 2026, researchers examine hiring and job separations across occupations with different potential exposure to AI. They find no broad evidence so far of a substantial AI-driven decline in hiring or increase in separations. Younger workers’ hiring has generally slowed, but much of that pattern predates recent generative-AI adoption. Published October 28, the analysis describes early evidence rather than a final verdict. It does not rule out future disruption or different experiences in particular occupations and workplaces.
